Summer RV Camping Tips

Staying cool in your recreational vehicle can be something of a challenge in hot weather, especially when you want to conserve power. Fortunately, there are a number of great strategies you can use to cool down your motorhome, so you’re no longer sweating buckets and can finally relax whenever you return from any hot outdoor adventures.

Try some of these summer RV camping tips provided by your friends here at Howard RV Center to see if you can make things a bit more comfortable on your next motorhome trip!

Stock Up On Supplies

Heat, like any other extreme weather, presents many health and safety risks, so it’s important that you ensure your rig is well-stocked with any emergency supplies you may need. For dealing with the sun and its effects, you’ll want high-SPF sunscreen on hand and it should be waterproof if you’re going swimming. Carry some aloe vera for burns. Bring a well-stocked first-aid kit with all the medicines and bandages you might need.

You’ll want to have a few fire extinguishers in the rig, as well as one in an outside storage space for when you’re cooking with a grill or campfire. Stock flashlights, a hand-crank radio, extra water and food, a hatchet, and an RV repair kit with tire patches in your rig. These will all be good things to have on hand regardless of the weather, but some of them become more necessary when it’s hot outside.

Keep Your RV Ventilated

Ventilating your RV will help remove hot air so it doesn’t feel as stuffy. If you don’t want to turn on the air-conditioning, then you’ll want to open up your rig to get air circulating. Open the windows on the shady side and set up fans with the door open to push out the heat. If your rig doesn’t have ceiling vents, you’ll want to get some installed because heat rises and becomes trapped in the roof. When you open up your roof vents, make sure that they’re covered to keep out rain and debris.

Park Strategically

Obviously, if you park your motorhome directly under the sun at its zenith, it’s going to overheat more quickly. While you may not have full control of where you park, especially when you’re assigned to a particular campsite, try to find the shadiest spot you possibly can. Face the side of your RV that has the most windows away from the afternoon sun and pull out your awning to keep the door side cooler.

Cook Outside

One of the quickest ways to heat up any motorhome, especially during a hot Texas summer, is through the kitchen. Turning on the stove and oven to cook food and boil water will make your RV a sauna in no time. Take things outside instead! Many RV campsites have an area for campfires, or you can set up a grill and cook that way. Prepare anything from fish to hot dogs to vegetable kebabs for your family to enjoy. You can also pepper your menu with cold foods that are quick to prepare, like pasta salads, yogurt parfaits, and sandwich buffets.

We hope these tips help you keep things less toasty when the sun is beating down outside. Still in need of the perfect RV for summer and fall traveling?
